Harlem Globetrotters

Photographs from the Harlem Globetrotters show in UL Limerick on Thursday 3rd June, can now be seen in the gallery above.

Simply click on 'Photographs' at the top of the Home page. Then click on '2009-2010 Season Sep to Dec' followed by 'The Harlem Globetrotters at the UL Arena'. There are 4 pages of photographs in the album.

Congratulations to our own Gavin Burke who was called out to shoot some free throws with the Globetrotters. Gavin showed extreme coolness to 'nail' his free throw and win a signed Globetrotters jersey. Well done Gavin - you were the star of the show.

Credit also to the 4 Fr Mathews 'stars' who opened the show with their 'magic' trick - see photos of the lads sitting as their chairs were removed from underneath them....Lloyd, we were all proud of you

2010 Awards Night

On Sunday, May 23rd, over 200 players, coaches, family members and friends of Fr Mathews Basketball Club descended on the Rochestown Park Hotel for our annual Awards Day. In what was described as the most memorable Awards Day since the club was formed John McHale (MC for the day) led proceedings by introducing the captains of each our cup winning teams into the hall to a fanfare of music and applause from the packed crowd. This was followed by a video review of the season just gone to the sounds of U2's 'Beautiful Day'. Before the main proceedings of the day began every player in attendance was invited up to the stage to a standing ovation from the people in attendance.

The next 90 minutes was filled with each coach announcing their respective MVP's and MIP's for the year just gone. The Evening Echo were in attendance to capture the moments and take team photographs of each of our teams. There were many dignitaries in attendance including Mr Kieran Lynch TD, Councilor Mick Finn and our own Ger Gibbons (councilor). We were also honoured to have the President of Basketball Ireland, Mr Timmy Murphy who was recipient of our 'Achievements Award'. Mr Padraig O'Donovan (sponsor of our All Ireland winning U14 team). Mr George Thompson, Editor of the Douglas Post, was in attendance to receive our 'Media Award'.

When the presentations and speeches were over Pat Cotter hosted a disco for those prepared to throw some 'shapes' on the dance floor. This was a fitting end to the most successful year in our clubs history.

Girls U14's lift U14B Top 4 Title

Fr Mathews Girls U14's lift U14B Top 4 Title

Congratulations go to Mark Foley and his superb Girls U14 side who were victorious in last Saturday's Top 4 Finals in the Parochial Hall.

After a very convincing victory in the Semi Final earlier in the afternoon against Donaghmore they faced Carraig na bhFear in the 6:00pm Final. A fantastic display of power, speed and an abundance of skill ensured that Mathews led from as early as the 2nd minute and never relinquished this lead winning by 12 points in the end.

The overall team performance was paramount to this victory but special mention must go to the McCarthy twins, Hannah and Ciara, Niamh Lynch at point guard and in particular U12 star Caroline O'Mahony who came off the bench to score an amazing 15 points in the game.

There will be a special Top 4 Feature in June's Hoop Scene so keep an eye out for this. There are also a wider selection of photo's from last Saturday's games in our website gallery. Go to Photo Gallery (above) and click on '2009-2010 Season' then click on 'Girls U14 Top 4 Finals'
